Psychology as a Tool for Navigating Life and Society
In my university teaching, I emphasize what I call "integrated psychology education." This approach brings together three complementary dimensions: research methods and statistical analysis, qualitative and quantitative research, and theory and practice. It aims to equip students with the technical skills needed to apply psychology professionally. At the same time, non-technical skills such as understanding others, communication, teamwork, and problem-solving are themselves important subjects of psychological research. I believe one of the most rewarding aspects of studying psychology is that it develops both professional expertise and the broader skills needed to thrive in society.
I have also been guided by social psychologist Kurt Lewin's observation that "there is nothing so practical as a good theory," which reflects my commitment to the ongoing exchange between theory and practice. My research focuses on interpersonal behavior and organizational psychology, particularly the psychological and behavioral processes involved in workplace collaboration, leadership, and career development. In this work, I have developed psychological scales and analytical methods to examine these processes empirically, applied the findings in educational and organizational settings, and drawn on challenges encountered in practice to develop new research questions.
My current research brings these lines of work together through the framework of collective leadership. I examine the conditions under which leadership emerges through interactions among team members, how it relates to team performance, and how the skills that support it can be developed and put into practice in organizations. My training activities in healthcare safety and human resource development are also part of this effort to connect research with practice. As AI continues to transform the way we work, I am particularly interested in developing the interpersonal and teamwork skills that are becoming increasingly important: the ability to engage directly with others, understand one another, and work together effectively.
